Will "The Dark Knight" sink "Titanic"?

Box office estimates for the Aug. 22-24 weekend showed that The Dark Knight had already grossed $489 million in the U.S. alone. For two weeks now it has already overtaken Star Wars as the second highest-grossing movie of all time (in the States, that is). It's still a long shot, though, from Titanic's $600 million.

I wasn't expecting Dark Knight to earn that much, judging from the performance of its predecessor Batman Begins. So, great! But personally, I don't think it could make another $100 million to dislodge Titanic from the top spot. But if it does, well great again! I'll be more than happy 'cause I just love the movie!

However, worldwide gross receipts are another story. We already know that the biggest love boat of them all earned $1.8 billion and remains unchallenged since 1997. So how does Dark Knight fare? Second? Third?

Sad to say, not even 10th place! It's way below the charts at no. 15! Way below Spider-man 3, Jurassic Park, and Shrek 2! Way below two Pirates, three LOTRs, and four Harry Potters! I'm a bit saddened by this. But judging by the figures, it could still easily climb two to four places at the very least.

Dark Knight needs a lot of push outside the U.S. To date, international gross receipts merely account for 43.8% of its box office total. In comparison, Titanic scored 67.4% of its total gross outside the U.S. And all the other films ahead of Dark Knight - with the exception of The Phantom Menace and Shrek 2 - earned at least 60% of their box office total outside the States. I just don't understand, though, why it didn't appeal internationally as much as it did in America.

But why does this bother me? I haven't put any money at all in this production! I'm not even remotely affiliated with Warner Bros.!

Maybe I should just heed The Joker's advice: WHY SO SERIOUS?
